Within L&I, our Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) administers the State of Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act, operating under agreement with Federal OSHA, and serves state citizens by protecting the safety and health of Washington’s workforce. As an Industrial Hygienist 4 Supervisor, you will provide coaching and mentorship to other Industrial Hygienists investigating complaints and referrals in various industries. By setting expectations, reviewing performance, and accompanying staff on field visits, you will ensure hazards are corrected, ultimately protecting the health and safety of Washington’s workers. You will also review and correct written reports and proposed penalties for technical accuracy and legal sufficiency.

Duties

Some of what you’ll be doing includes:

  • Making hiring recommendations, ensuring staff adhere to policies, taking corrective action when needed, approving leave, conducting annual evaluations and setting expectations, as well as providing mentorship and training opportunities.
  • Reviewing written inspection reports, letters to complainants and other correspondence resulting from compliance activities.
  • Ensuring reports are accurate, legally sufficient, and adhere to the Compliance Manual.
  • Attending inspection reviews and briefings on high profile cases.
  • Responding to inquiries from the general public.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and/or health, industrial hygiene, chemistry, physics, chemical, mechanical or sanitary engineering, environmental science, nursing, medicine, biology or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of professional experience as an industrial hygienist or environmental professional in the field, or in governmental enforcement, or program implementation activities of industrial hygiene programs.
  • Three (3) years of experience as an Industrial Hygienist 3 or equivalent.

Please Note: A Master’s degree in industrial hygiene or a related field can substitute for one year of industrial hygiene or related field experience.

  • Knowledge of federal and state occupational health programs, policies and regulations. Understanding of WA Industrial Safety and Health Administration (WISHA) and OSHA (federal government’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration) rules and regulations; able to explain to customers what their businesses must do to comply with these regulations.
  • The ability to interview, hire, assign and direct work, evaluate and discipline one or more employees.

Desired:

  • Three (3) years or more of OSHA or State OSHA experience.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.
  • Bilingual preferred.

Within the Department of Labor & Industries, conditional to serious hazard exposure as defined by RCW 49.17.180(6): Industrial Hygienists and Safety & Health Specialists will be compensated basic salary plus ten percent (10%) for each hour they are required to use personal protective equipment (excluding hard hats, boots, hearing and eye protection) to enter a hazardous worksite to consult, inspect or investigate where serious hazards are present.
