Job Summary

The School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan is pleased to announce searches for eight (8) new tenure-track faculty members as part of a strategic hiring initiative targeting several emerging and multidisciplinary themes. As part of this initiative, we are searching for an Implementation Scientist who utilizes methods and strategies to promote the uptake of evidence-based physical activity interventions with the aim of improving community health and reducing health disparities. This hire builds on existing faculty interests to develop a research group in the area of health equity and social change through physical activity and sport.

As part of one of the highest ranked public universities in the nation and one of the world’s preeminent research institutions, we invite applications and nominations for a faculty position at the level of Associate Professor or Assistant Professor. Assistant professors are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates will be expected to maintain a robust, ongoing research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and have research expertise appropriate for the effective mentoring of trainees at the undergraduate, doctoral and post-doctoral levels. Successful candidates will be expected to maintain extramural funding for an active research program at the University of Michigan.

The School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan is the top Kinesiology program in the United States according to a recent review by the National Academy of Kinesiology. In addition to the many exciting opportunities for collaboration within the School of Kinesiology, state of the art implementation science resources are available at the University through the national Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) Implementation Research Group and the Medical School Department of Learning Health Sciences (DLHS) Implementation Collaborative. The University of Michigan is also home to several internationally recognized implementation science researchers. As such, faculty members will have multiple opportunities to receive ongoing support both in the School of Kinesiology and University as a whole.

The School of Kinesiology is one of 19 independent academic units and one of seven health science schools and colleges within the University of Michigan. The School is led by a Dean (Dean Lori Ploutz-Snyder), has 31 tenure-line faculty and approximately 1000 students. Our school is currently (Winter 2021) in the process of moving into a newly renovated, state-of-the-art academic and research building (School of Kinesiology Building) which is located in the heart of the University of Michigan’s main campus. The $120,000,000 renovation project will expand the School of Kinesiology’s research, classroom, and office space to approximately 250,000 sq ft. The research space in this newly renovated building will include approximately 9,000 sq ft of open wet-lab, 3,000 sq ft vivarium, 3,000 sq ft clinical testing suite and a 2,000 sq ft clinical exercise training center.

Required Qualifications

We have interest in candidates from different disciplines whose research centers on exercise and implementation science, including those with training and backgrounds in kinesiology, public health, social (i.e., policy, organization, management), medical (i.e., preventative, rehabilitation, health services) or other health science fields. Example areas of study include, but are not limited to: clinical, school and/or community-based physical activity interventions, ehealth, disparities, active transportation, and healthy living. A doctoral (Ph.D.) degree is required.

Assistant Professor candidates should demonstrate academic independence with respect to: 1) publishing high-quality, peer reviewed research, 2) mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and 3) teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise and 4) having independent research funding or show outstanding promise for future funding.

At the Associate rank, candidates should also demonstrate a consistent and ongoing record of securing research funding, as well as experience and skill in providing leadership that will advance the scholarly excellence of the Applied Exercise Science Program School of Kinesiology.
