Who We Are:

The Space Science team in the Space Science and Engineering Division includes scientists and engineers from all backgrounds that endeavor in the development of technology, science payloads and avionics systems for the advancement of space science; aboard small-sats, sounding rockets and space-craft.

Objectives of this Role:

  • To understand space environment from an energetic particle perspective
  • Become familiar with Radiation Environment tools
  • Help internal and external customers determine the implications of space radiation environment in the design/development of space-based systems and technology
  • Become familiar with radiation analysis and transport SW, including Monte Carlo, and sector analysis modeling methods
  • Perform radiation transport analysis for spacecraft structures and subsystems and generate shielding analysis reports and present results to projects
  • Understand the various manifestations of radiation effects on electronic devices and materials, so as to generate and execute test plans, generate/analyze radiation test reports and present results to projects
  • To understand electronic circuits and devices for susceptibility and robustness to radiation
  • Evaluate space-based designs for radiation-induced developmental costs
  • Help develop institute-wide plans and processes to minimize impact of radiation effects on costs and performance
  • Assist institute scientists and program managers in developing radiation requirements and system developmental requirements for radiation tolerance, including mechanical shielding and electronics radiation-hardening

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

  • Support the Science and Engineering Staff in the generation of proposal materials
  • Pursue any potential related business opportunities
  • Report to management, Team members and/or clients regarding project specific status and assigned tasks
  • Seek out external business opportunities
  • Provide outstanding radiation modeling services and develop new modeling capabilities within the Division and SwRI as a whole
  • Research literature for existing radiation effects test data

Requirements:

  • Requires an Bachelors or a Masters or a PhD with a 3.00 GPA in Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Physics or Astro Physics or directly related engineering or physics degree
  • Those with a PhD require 0 years of experience but must have related dissertation and/or academic lab experience
  • Those with a BS or MS require at 2 years of experience
  • Space-based or high reliability system design experience, or radiation effects related field experience
  • High Energetic Particle Lab knowledge
  • A valid/clear driver’s license is required

Special Requirements:

Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident due to ITAR work in section.
