We are seeking a POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTEE
We have a great opportunity for a postdoctoral appointee to join our compound semiconductor microelectronics team! We work in a highly collaborative teaming environment to conduct III-N compound semiconductor research and development utilizing microfabrication processes for a wide variety of microelectronic devices with direct, relevant impact to our national security mission. The selected candidate will get to lead and support research and development activities enabling the technology maturation of novel III-N based microelectronics devices utilizing our world-class microfabrication and characterization facilities. We are seeking an independent worker with strong self-motivation that can drive realization of a device or experimental result when starting from an idea or concept. This position requires a combination of individual contribution, coordination with engineering support personnel, and collaboration with other Sandia technical staff. Responsibilities include reporting results through internal and external publications and presentations and working with customers to understand and meet requirements and develop new business opportunities.
Examples of the roles for this position may include:
- Performing full suite of microelectronic fabrication processes and characterization including metrology, photolithography, wet and dry etch, metal evaporation and electroplating, thin film deposition, wafer thinning, and dicing.
- Leading process development efforts utilizing design of experiments methodologies for novel III-N device technology and applying creative problem solving to technical challenges.
- Conducting DC/RF electrical device characterization and interpreting electrical data to evaluate device performance as feedback to epitaxy, fabrication and design.
- Coordinating with process engineers, technicians and lab/equipment owners to deliver on negotiated project commitments.
- Authoring publications and new project proposals.
Qualifications We Require
- PhD conferred in the last 5 years, in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or related field
- At least one year of cleanroom microfabrication experience
- Record of publication and innovation, as evidenced by peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences
- Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE clearance
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience with compound semiconductor fabrication and process development
- Experience with characterization of microelectronic or optoelectronic devices
- Evidence of dedication to laboratory safety

The III-V Microelectronics Department is responsible for the research, development and technology maturation of Group III-V compound semiconductors within the Microsystems Engineering, Science and Applications Center. With highly collaborative teaming we enable the creation, development and delivery of application specific microelectronic components addressing high-performance, harsh-environment communication, sensing and control problems. Our products provide solutions to customers who need a trusted partner to build and deliver on stated performance, size, weight, power and cost benefits relative to alternative technologies. Core department capabilities include electronic modeling and simulation; epitaxial design, growth and characterization; rad-hard microelectronic device and circuit design, microfabrication, characterization, and reliability; and high-reliability microelectronic product design, characterization, and delivery for high-consequence national security applications.
This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia’s discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
