The Michigan State Police is looking to add members to the ranks of the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division.

If you are looking to make a difference in the lives of millions of Michigan motorists, consider a career as a Motor Carrier Officer. Motor Carrier Officers are fully armed members of the Michigan State Police with enforcement authority throughout the state of Michigan. Motor Carrier Officers specialize in commercial vehicles and duties include taking enforcement action, responding to emergencies, investigating traffic crashes, vehicle inspections, drug interdiction, weigh station operation, as well as public service presentations. Motor Carrier Officer’s patrol is self-directed and encourages proactive and independent decision making.

No criminal justice or law enforcement experience required.

Motor Carrier Officers complete our training academy in Lansing, Michigan where they receive hands-on, lecture, and scenario-based instruction in firearms, patrol techniques, first aid, criminal law, precision driving, water safety, defensive tactics, report writing, ethics, FMCSA regulations, cultural diversity and implicit bias.

During the training academy recruits receive approximately $3,500 a month and officers reach a base salary of $61,000 after 6 years, not including overtime and shift premiums.

Every effort is made to make initial post assignment requests while balancing the needs of the agency. Officers can transfer to different posts across the state after completion of the training program.

Schedules prioritize day shifts, limited weekends, and 12 paid holidays a year.

Receive health, dental, vision and life insurance from the State of Michigan and accrue separate annual and sick leave time off each pay period.

All uniforms and equipment are provided.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 21 years of age by recruit school graduation
  • A valid driver’s license without restrictions
  • Possess a satisfactory driving record
  • High school diploma or GED certificate
  • Pass minimum hearing and vision standards
  • No felony arrests or convictions
