Associate Engineer – Electrical

Cleveland-Cliffs is the largest flat-rolled steel company and the largest iron ore pellet producer in North America. The company is vertically integrated from mining through iron making, steelmaking, rolling, finishing and downstream with hot and cold stamping of steel parts and components.

One of the missions of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc is to utilize the latest technological advances available in the steel industry. This mission affords our engineers countless unique opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills they learned during their undergraduate engineering studies, from automation, to advanced electrical control techniques, to power distribution, and to any of the other disciplines within electrical engineering. The technologies that are employed today span 50 years. The range of knowledge required therefore is broad. Relay logic through every generation of solid state up to the most current control schemes. Likewise, this mission also affords the Company the continuous need to recruit and hire the best and brightest electrical engineers available.

Our main functions are to operate, maintain, upgrade, and purchase new equipment to produce steel products to satisfy our customers’ ever increasing product demands. The processes are complex and highly interactive. Technically skilled management is required to handle the production challenges of today and guide the business into future generations of steels and their competitive production. Our jobs are to manage today’s efforts and guide the way into the future.

As an electrical engineer at Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., you will typically be assigned to operations, maintenance, technology, or process automation. The work is primarily in the operations where much of your learning, observations, and interactions will take place. Office work is largely administrative, in-depth study, planning, engineering, etc., but even this is very much field based. Experience as a front-line supervisor is required to advance in operational management positions. Engineering duties may include: supervising a crew of hourly maintenance employees; recommending and/or performing predictive, preventative and emergency maintenance of equipment; researching, designing, evaluating, installing, modernizing, re-designing, operating, maintaining and repairing machinery and equipment; resolving equipment malfunctions, including those requiring scheduled shutdowns or breakdown action; planning, scheduling, and cost control of maintenance/engineering projects; reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports; analyzing current operating performance and standard operating procedures and making recommendations for improvement and various other duties as needed to support the business.

Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. generally requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent experience, for this position. In addition, the Company generally does not sponsor candidates for temporary visas or permanent residency at the Bachelor’s level.

Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. is an equal opportunity employer. We evaluate qualified applicants without regard to race, age, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, veteran status, and other legally protected characteristics.
